Functional Gastroenterology

Dr. Mark is Board Certified in Gastroenterology, Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine , and Internal Medicine. He is also a Member of the Institute of Functional Medicine. In addition to practicing conventional Gastroenterology, he also practices Functional Gastroenterology, which means that he is fully trained to evaluate and treat gastrointestinal illnesses with an emphasis on determining the root cause, rather than just symptom relief.

Functional Gastroenterology is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It relies on a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages these data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to optimized patient outcomes. We may offer other natural treatment options rather than relying solely on prescription medications alone, if Dr. Mark determines that natural treatment options would yield superior results, while avoiding potentially serious side effects of certain prescription drugs.

For example, some classes of medications used to suppress acid production in the stomach are now linked to a higher incidence of developing Alzheimer’s Disease, and long term use of these medications may not be appropriate. However, once someone is used to using these acid blockers, our body gets used to it, and it may be near impossible to stop these medication unless you are properly transitioned off of them.

When the circumstances are appropriate, we would gradually switch our patients over to natural supplements which provide the same protection, but without the associated side effects to provide superior clinical outcome.
